ICANN Seeks Input on String Similarity Review Guidelines

7 February 2024

Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opened a new Public Comment proceeding.

A visual string similarity review will be a part of the initial evaluation of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) application process. The goal of the review is to prevent user confusion and loss of confidence in the Domain Name System resulting from the delegation of visually similar strings. In preparation for the expanded scope, which will include variant strings in the next round of gTLDs, the ICANN organization is developing detailed guidelines and seeking the community's feedback.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
