Public Comment

Public Comment is a vital part of our multistakeholder model. It provides a mechanism for stakeholders to have their opinions and recommendations formally and publicly documented. It is an opportunity for the ICANN community to effect change and improve policies and operations.

ICANN staff and Verisign have created a proposed .NET registry agreement that is deeply flawed, and is by no means a "routine" renewal.

The implications of the policy changes are enormous, and yet have not been adequately highlighted to affected stakeholders. As such, the public comment period should be extended by at least an additional 2 months, so that ICANN staff and Verisign can hold a public meeting at ICANN77 to explain and justify the proposed changes.

This proposed agreement would allow any government in the world to cancel, redirect or transfer to their control applicable domain names. This is an outrageous and dangerous proposal that must be stopped.

If this was unintentional, both ICANN and Verisign should withdraw the proposed agreemeent, in favour of simply renewing the existing agreement unchanged. If this was intentional, then you're in for the fight of your lives, as I'm confident the public will not allow you to get away with this egregious change that harms the rights of registrants to due process.

Summary of Submission

This proposed agreement would allow any government in the world to cancel, redirect or transfer to their control applicable domain names. This is an outrageous and dangerous proposal that must be stopped. This control should go through a due legal process and not controlled by ICANN or Verisign.
