The 2023 Africa Domain Name Industry Study is a comprehensive and informative analysis of the current state and future potential of the domain name industry in Africa. The study identifies a number of key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) facing the industry. However, some information is not equal to the reality of data, before or now. This may be due to the response gathered or the challenge of the sourced data.

Whether the 3R (Registry, Registrar, Registrant) model is definitively better than the 2R (Registry, Registrant) model depends on various factors and perspectives. The 3R model offers potential benefits in terms of competition, innovation, and local development, but can be administratively complex. The 2R model can be simpler and more efficient, but raises concerns about control and market dynamics. Ultimately, the optimal model depends on the specific needs, priorities, and context of each country. We must consider the Level of internet penetration and digital literacy, Regulatory environment and government objectives, and existing infrastructure and technical capacity.

The priorities of stakeholders like registrants, registrars, and the registry itself should be weighted against the benefit of a reseller. Most resellers act as consultants, making the decision of what domain string to use. They often come as Web Builders or Webmaster, taking the time to decide what services should be adopted for the average registrant.

The validity of some data is skewed. There are 11 colocation data center facilities in Nigeria. NiRA currently has 100 Accredited Registrars. Lower demand, limited economies of scale, and sometimes local presence requirements contribute to higher pricing. The price of a domain name in Nigeria is $1.00 today, compared to 2016 at $10.00. With a pricing charter, .ng has been less than $15.00 since 2017 to date. In 2022, Premium Domain Names went from $2,143.00 to $143.00. This is from a Nigerian perspective.

It is important to note that appraising other studies requires careful consideration of the data, methodology, and conclusions. Without being able to access and process the data used in such a study, it is impossible to fully assess its validity. Additionally, it is important to consider the potential biases of the researchers and to compare the findings of the study with other studies on the same topic.

Traditional international hosting comes with hefty price tags, often exceeding local budgets. Despite the benefits, local web hosting still faces challenges in gaining wider adoption. Affordable, reliable, and locally-operated servers will empower entrepreneurs, foster innovation, and bridge the digital divide, leading to more connections. I was hoping a recommendation would be in order.

Overall, the study provides a valuable overview of the strengths and weaknesses of Africa's DNS industry ecosystem. It can be used to inform policy decisions and interventions aimed at strengthening the industry and promoting its growth and sustainability. Great information for decision makers.

Summary of Submission

The 2023 Africa Domain Name Industry Study offers insights into the continent's domain landscape, analyzing its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). However, certain data points require further scrutiny due to potential discrepancies between the study and current realities.

The 3R vs. 2R Model: Determining the ideal model (Registry, Registrar, Registrant vs. Registry, Registrant) hinges on specific contexts. While the 3R model promotes competition and local development, its complexity raises administrative concerns. The 2R model offers simplicity but raises concerns about control and market dynamics. Ultimately, the optimal model depends on factors like internet penetration, digital literacy, regulatory environments, and existing infrastructure.

Reseller Role and Data Accuracy: The study's analysis of resellers' roles and domain name pricing in Nigeria raises questions. Considering the current price of $1 in Nigeria compared to $10 in 2016, the data may be skewed. This highlights the importance of carefully evaluating data, methodology, and conclusions in any study. Access to raw data and awareness of researcher biases are crucial to fully assess validity. Comparing findings with other studies on the same topic is also essential.

Overall Significance: Despite the data concerns, the study provides a valuable overview of Africa's DNS industry. By acknowledging the strengths and weaknesses identified, policymakers and stakeholders can make informed decisions to strengthen and promote the industry's growth.
