Previewing the June Board Workshop and ICANN77

8 June 2023

With deadlines approaching across several key projects, including the next round of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), the ICANN Board of Directors looks forward to coming together next week for the ICANN77 Policy Forum to build on that momentum.

Before the Policy Forum kicks off on 12 June in Washington, D.C., and online, the Board will hold a workshop to prepare for the meeting and continue its work on several initiatives.

I'd like to share with you an overview of the agenda for the workshop, taking place 9–11 June, and a few highlights of the ICANN77 schedule:

June Board Workshop

  • New gTLD Program Next Round: Since the Board's adoption of 98 of the recommendations contained in the gTLD Subsequent Procedures Policy Development Process Final Report, the ICANN Community, Organization (Org), and Board have been hard at work to complete four key deliverables by the last day of ICANN77. During the workshop, the Board will review the progress toward these goals, receive a preview of the Org's Implementation Plan due to be delivered by 1 August, and discuss the remaining decisions that the Board must make on opening the next application round.

  • NomCom2 Review: In March, the Board initiated a Bylaws Amendment Process to implement four recommendations from the Second Organizational Review of the Nominating Committee (NomCom2 Review). The Board has since opened a Public Comment proceeding on the proposed amendments. At this workshop, the Board will review the topic of rebalancing the committee and discuss the related issues and possible courses of action.

  • ICANN Grant Program: ICANN Org staff will provide an update on their progress in implementing this program, including how and when the first application cycle will open. If you missed the Grant Program Update during Prep Week, you can watch the recording on the session page.

  • Privacy and Proxy Services Accreditation: The ICANN Board and Org staff will present a plan for moving forward with this policy in light of ongoing related work, including the implementation of the Registration Data Policy and the development of the Registration Data Request Service.

  • President and CEO Goals: Each year, the ICANN Board and the President and CEO collaborate to develop a list of goals that help guide the Organization's activities during the upcoming fiscal year. In this session, Interim President and CEO Sally Costerton will present the draft President and CEO goals for fiscal year 2024.

ICANN77 Policy Forum

  • Upstander Training: This unique session on Monday, 12 June, will provide tips and tools to help reduce instances of disrespect and harassment by disrupting the perpetrator. Open to all ICANN77 participants, this session will be led by a trainer from Right to Be, a nonprofit that provides anti-discrimination and anti-harassment training.

  • President and CEO Search Update: As Chair Chris Chapman wrote in his blog, the Board's CEO Search Committee will present the draft candidate profile and job description for ICANN's next leader during a plenary session on Tuesday, 13 June. The committee will also present the projected timeline and next steps in the President and CEO search.

  • Facilitated Dialogue on Closed Generics: Together, the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), and At-Large Advisory Committee will hold two sessions, one on Monday and one on Tuesday, that are open to observers. This group aims to have a draft framework ready to share with the Community by the end of ICANN77.

  • GNSO Council Meeting: The GNSO Council will hold an open meeting on Wednesday, 14 June, and Community members are invited to engage with the Council directly at a mini town hall. The Council will also discuss the Domain Name System Abuse Small Team's preliminary findings, the timeline of the next round of new gTLD applications, and other topics.

My Board colleagues and I are also looking forward to a joint session with the GAC on Wednesday, and to participating in many other sessions with the Community throughout the week. See you there!
