New gTLD Program
History
The process of introducing new gTLDs to the marketplace has been a long time in the making; to give a sense of the history and path followed, this page contains the historical data on the development of the New gTLD policy that serves as a foundation to the current Program's development work. The policy on how the introduction was to be implemented was completed by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) in 2007, and adopted by ICANN's Board in June, 2008. The two previous gTLD application rounds that ICANN held were in 2000 and 2003. Please note that the requirements for those previous rounds are different from the currently proposed application criteria.
