ICANN Webinar: Framework for Public Interest and Registry Voluntary Commitments

11 December 2023

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) invites the community to participate in a webinar to kick off a community consultation on Public Interest Commitments and Registry Voluntary Commitments in the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program: Next Round. The webinar will provide an overview of a proposed implementation framework and specific questions posed for community feedback, as well as an opportunity for the community to ask questions.

Attendees will gain a better understanding of issues surrounding a subset of recommendations from the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures Policy Development Process that were adopted at ICANN78. The Generic Names Supporting Organization recommended that applicants be permitted—and in some cases, required—to enter into Registry Agreements containing public interest commitments with ICANN.

To ensure that the framework for implementing these recommendations is consistent with the ICANN Bylaws, the ICANN Board directed the organization to facilitate a community consultation. The consultation is meant to "confirm the intended scope of the enforceability of content-related commitments within contracts for new gTLDs," and to ensure that the ICANN Board, organization, and community are aligned in how these recommendations can be implemented. It also will inform the development of the Applicant Guidebook for the New gTLD Program: Next Round.

Date: Monday, 18 December 2023
Time: 19:00–20:30 UTC

Please see participation details on the dedicated webpage.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
