ICANN Keeps Building Global Relationships With Frameworks

1 November 2007

LOS ANGELES, Calif.: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has signed four more exchanges of letters with country code top level domain operators – bring the total to seven signed at ICANN’s 30th International Public Meeting in Los Angeles.

The exchange of letters signed and completed over the past few days include:

.it — Italy, Istituto di Informatica e Telematica of CNR ('IIT-CNR')

.ck — Cook Islands, Telecom Cook Islands Limited (TCIL)

.fm — Federated States of Micronesia, FSM Telecommunications Corporation (FSMTC)

.sb — Solomon Islands, Solomon Telekom Company Limited

The Accountability Framework program provides two mechanisms by which ccTLD managers can formalize their relationship with ICANN. The first is an Accountability Framework document that sets out the obligations of a ccTLD manager and ICANN. It also covers dispute resolution and termination and is designed for ccTLD managers requiring a formal document with ICANN.

The second mechanism is an exchange of letters between ICANN and the ccTLD manager designed for those for whom a simple statement of commitment is more appropriate.

Signed accountability framework and exchange of letters documents can be found at http://www.icann.org/cctlds/agreements.html.

About ICANN:

ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers like domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .uk) and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet's operation, so ICANN's global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet's ongoing security and stability. ICANN is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.
